The "TOYS" in the hood are always hard...
I'm no GrafArtist, but when I see walls that are bare in the neighborhood, I can't stop staring and thinking of the possibilities. In the world of street art, I'd be called a "toy" a newbie, someone who is just getting started in what is normally considered an illegal activity. But living on a small island, through coconut wireless, many artists can find local spots to express themselves again and again. After feeling the awesomeness of painting on an outside building, there's simply nothing better to paint on. And when you are dealing with weather conditions, timing, and planning enough materials for the "bomb"or street (graffiti) art....it seems to be even more of an adrenaline rush. I'm still working on speed painting with live portraits...but now with the launch of 'HI-WALL Exhibitions' through the Hawaii Mural Arts, I can now practice more speed painting with live mural designs!! Painting on an even larger scale completing the design without stopping----now that's a challenge!

I see everything so differently now that I've been researching mural design more. With street artists like; Banksy & Fairey out there, I'm now adding stencil & sticker design to wall artworks...still in the trial & error phase...but I know my sh** is going to be tight! I can't wait to offer my next entry for next exhibition on Maui...this Friday is receiving day...not sure I'll get in because I'm not willing to frame my art...a frame is like a box...and I tend to create outside the box...so nah, no framing for me. Guess if it gets rejected again, I'll have a bad arse pic for my art studio hehe...

As the second HMA exhibition is underway, can't help but be a little disappointed in the limited amount of resources to gather more muralists to represent Maui no ka oi!! If I saw any ads posted around for that gig, I'd be on it like blue bonnet fersure....even a sign at a garage sale, I'd jump at the chance to paint for the day to music and good food!! Guess it has allot to do with the fact that we are a fairly new business with fairly new skills at starting a nonprofit...yep, it's just a handful of us Maui artists for now...and we are carefully moving at a slower pace to avoid errors in getting started.
So while we move carefully through the process dotting all i's and crossing all t's...inbetween bylaws and minutes, we are introducing our community to the future of Hawaii's Mural Arts and how permaculture design, Soil Health, & sustainability can be introduced through eco design & community workshops.

We are gathering up materials to introduce various types of wall art and mural designs, while paying attention to our resources by not creating more rubbish for our landfills. I am interested in bringing the "speed" painting street art style to communities that may not have the resources or availability of art materials, but want to see a change in their community. With the advance in street art design steadily increasing, "speed" murals are now possible. Now incredible wall art can literally be painted on a roll of inexpensive shipping paper and stuck up on a wall using glue & wheat paste. With that kind of cost, can you imagine what's possible for low income or poverty stricken communities...all over the world? A major shift is already happening with the perception of street art and how it's viewed. In some places artists are even encouraged to spraypaint their artwork on a building. Because street art is illegal, it's only as permanent as it's fans...so now it's a race to see who's the most eye-stopping and worth the extra glance. HMA is encouraging the best Muralists to step forward and apply their skills for the benefit of education and linking our islands Aloha! We are not just looking for Muralists, we are looking for speed artists, who can help us reach more communities with our Hawaii Mural Arts.

See you on the other side,

~M.
