HAWAII MURAL ARTS...has arrived.
Maui Muralists please stand up!! Dig out all your spray cans, paint cans, stamps, stencils, and get your mural work seen!!! (www.himuralarts.com)

Maui finally has a place for Mural Arts and events specifically created to feature our islands best wall artists! It's our second exhibition...and although it's  moving rather "carefully"...we are steadily gaining more muralists interested in becoming a part of HMA. I couldn't be more stoked right now. I've met truly inspirational artists in the last few months, who want to see HMA grow into Maui's first and only organization for Mural Arts.

Our second exhibition; "Coffee or Ti" will be to celebrate our islands coffee farmers & businesses. I think it will help with the speed painting too hehe...slammin coffee shots all day should get the murals up in no time! lol! I'm not getting to perform at this event but I will definitely be needing coffee to set up before sunrise and break down after late night. Artists will be given a full 24hr opportunity if needed...but event starts at 10am for community to witness these speed murals in action!

Although, I may not be throwing up a mural, I'll definitely be at the Banyan Tree in Wailuku every Wednesday from 10am to 1pm to promote our organizations "CINCO DE MAYO" exhibition. And HMA was offered another opportunity to promote our HI-WALL Exhibition at Maui's "420" event; '1st Annual REGGAE ON DA ROCK with Reggaes favorite familia---Lambsbread! I am excited to be painting live on stage with another incredible artist and daughter of Lead vocalists of Lambsbread...will announce her name here soon...not sure yet if she'd like to remain stealth (; This 420 event will be hosted by; The Cannabiz Review, Hawaii Veteran Cannabis Alliance, & Tokin' Daily. Other music will be presented by; No Grudge, Spittin' Image, Baysic, and more! Info/tickets? www.reggaeontherock.com

Allot of fun times ahead still this month...but I'm all about the art...and getting Maui on the map for (innovative) mural design. One thing I will be putting time aside for are my own artworks; a Hui exhibition (receiving day is May 10) & a special gig on Big Island...a bathroom mural!! My first bathroom mural!!! Yeah!!! Seriously, I'm probably the most excited about this gig for my work to be brought outer island!! Swear it's a dream come true...I'm flattered to be considered because I know there's artists on BigI who are watching...and hopefully, I'll be able to spread the word about HMA while there. It's also a new way to travel with my mural works...upon arrival, I'm going to mount to whatever owner prefers and then clear coat it so it's permanent. The challenge will be to find enough time to complete this design before May 10...yep, it's game time...and I let the owner know the design is also going to be my entry for this Hui exhibition...more like perfect "crunch" timing (:

HMA Muralist, Anne Provost puts on final touches of her mural design
"A Time For All Seasons" donated to HFUU for auction, great work Annie!!!!

In-between plans, I need to hit the pavement and blanket the island with promotional materials for May 5. I've bribed my kids for posting flyers because well, I believe in child labor hehe...as long as it's my own heehee. People often ask where I find the time, and I often say, "what's that?" I don't have a watch, I don't have an appointment book, and right now, I pretty much don't have the financial support one needs to guarantee a successful event. But what I do have are great people around me to lift me up and encourage me to keep going, people that want to see positive changes in the community. Basically, this past year I've been running most of my life on prayers...yep, the power of prayers to the Most Highest High!!...that's how we "starving artists" roll. And thankfully, it's been miracles and blessings this year...I ask and receive...I work hard EVERY DAY and try to be as patient as possible...and my creator ALWAYS delivers.  (BLESS UP!!!)

Many of the other artists are working the same vibe...we are all "starving artists" who love our community and planet...and we are willing to move slowly making sure we are not always asking, but offering to kokua too.  We figure out ways to recycle, reuse, renew and encourage everyone to do the same. This kind of thinking is what is happening everywhere...people don't want to waste, people want to take what they have and make it better. Communities are starting to become "communities" by work trade, volunteering, donating, and bringing people together in the most brilliant ways...like through art. My vision for a better community anywhere on this planet is to mix; recycling, self-sustainability, eco-enviro consciousness, and art art art. And I've been doing things NOW RATHER THAN LATER. No excuses. If opportunity knocks, I'm in.
Here's an example; I was chilling at the hale gardening just trimmed all my trees (no not those kine!) and I get a call from one of the other HMA members, "eh, howzit sister? wanna paint live to promote HMA?" (my eyes wide) "YES." "Well, throw your stuff in the truck, we start in couple hours"

I threw my hair up, grabbed my easel, wrapped a canvas with shipping paper (ran out of boat canvas), and pulled into gig less than an hour later....best time I've had painting live in a long time...and met the lead singers of Lambsbread...awesome familia with incredible sound...you are truly missing out if you haven't seen this reggae familia in action! Ok...here's vid;

See you on the other side,

~M.
